1st day of December one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight Between The Undersigned One of the Crown Agents for the Colonies of Downing Street Westminster in the County of Middlesex acting for and on behalf of The Government of Hong Kong (hereinafter called the Government) of the one part and Joe Rowland Brook of 8 Fielding Road West Kensington, London in the County of Middlesex of the other part
Where it is agreed by and between the parties hereto as follows
The said J. Rowland Cook (hereinafter called the person engaged) is hereby appointed an Assistant Engineer in the Colony of Hong Kong
The period of service shall be for Three years commencing from the date of arrival in Hong Kong and he will be placed under the orders of the Resident Engineer of the Water and Drainage Works and in the event of his services not being required by this Officer for the whole period of his engagement his services shall be placed at the disposal of the Surveyor General of the Colony until the completion of his engagement and he shall not either directly or indirectly engage or be concerned in any other service or business whatsoever or receive commissions of any kind but shall devote the whole of his time and attention to the service of the Government and shall use his utmost exertions to promote the interests of the Government...
3 The chief duties of the person engaged shall be the
